A basic system is made up of:
- Bidirectional amplifier.
- The donor antenna (external) captures the signal from the base radio.
- Service antenna (internal) to distribute the signal inside or towards the required area.
- A pair of coaxial cables interconnect the antennas to the amplifier.
If you want to distribute the signal in more than one area, two or more antennas are required; For this, power dividers and separators are used.
It is recommended to integrate protectors against atmospheric discharges. Currently, cellular telephony operates in two ranges:
- 824-894 MHz, called the “850 MHz Band”.
- 1850-1990 MHz, known as the “1900 MHz Band” or “PCS Band.”
Nextel operates in the 806-866 MHz segment, sharing this range with 800 MHz trunked systems.
The most important parameter in the installation of an amplifier is the total gain of the system. On average, a 10 dB increase (whether in the amplifier, antennas, or base radio signal) represents a 2.5- to 3-fold increase in coverage.
The area it covers depends on several factors:
- The intensity of the signal abroad, the higher the level, and the greater the coverage.
- The gain of the amplifier.
- The gain of the internal and external antennas.
- Loss of cables, power dividers, and separators.
- The number of simultaneous calls.
Since the system operates in both directions (Uplink / Downlink) and retransmits on the same frequency, there is a possibility that the signal from the external antenna reaches the internal antenna and vice versa. This causes equipment lockup or gain reduction.
To avoid the above, ensure a minimum separation between antennas of 15 to 30 meters.
